  1. Plan your essay
    • Do some general reading on the topic
    • Brainstorm or mind-map your ideas
    • Look for keywords and links between ideas
    • Decide what position you are going to take
    • Select points to support your position
  2. Structure your argument
    • Formulate a thesis statement explaining your position
    • Make your thesis statement short and debatable
    • Plan your paragraphs using the funnel essay structure
    • Make only one point per paragraph
    • Back-up points with academic research
    • Provide examples, evidence and explanations
    • Use counter-arguments if needed
  3. Edit and revise
    • Never hand in a first draft!
    • Revise your introduction and conclusion
    • Check that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence
    • Edit for logical flow, clarity, and signposts
    • Proofread your spelling and grammar
    • Check referencing and formatting
