Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

Why Mental Health First Aid is important

  • Mental health problems are common, especially anxiety, depression and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
  • There is stigma associated with mental health problems and this can prevent people from seeking help.
  • Many people are not well informed about how to recognise mental health problems and what effective treatments are available.

Course content

Mental Health First Aid training provides an understanding of common mental health problems and practical strategies to support someone experiencing a mental health problem. The course covers the following;

  • Understanding the nature of depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and psychosis
  • Recognising signs and symptoms of common mental health problems
  • Responding appropriately to a mental health crisis
  • Promoting and assisting others to access appropriate support in the community.
